White Rhino

[White Rhino at Lake Nakuru] White Rhinos are larger than Black Rhinos. They are also grazers - they eat grass - as opposed to black rhinos which are browsers - eating bushes and trees. Whites are more social while blacks tend to be solitary. Rhinos have excellent hearing and smell but are nearsighted. Despite their size they tend to be skittish . . . possibly because 80% of their population was poached in the 70's and 80's?

Even though they are large, they can move pretty fast. They are also much more squat and compact than elephants. They look more like battleships than anything else. The white rhinos we saw were imported from South Africa.
